BEAVERS LOOKING FOR NEW COACH & GM:

The Blind River Beavers are currently looking for qualified individuals interested in coaching and/or managing a Junior A hockey team in Northern Ontario in the positions of HEAD COACH and GENERAL MANAGER.

As the HEAD COACH, you possess all of the certifications required by the NOJHL, NOHA, and Hockey Canada, and will follow the regulations/rules of each governing body. You understand the intricacies of balancing a team made up of players experiencing their first year of Junior A hockey as well as veterans in their final year and getting the most from each player through practise, skill development, game review, dry-land training, and one-on-one discussions. Your connections in the scouting community have served you well in the past and you can count on them again to help you fill out our team. Older players who have shown skill and promise know you will help them move onto post-secondary institutions or other opportunities such as the OHL. Beavers search for owner, coach, sponsors for 2012-13 season
By KELLY JAMES/FOR THE STANDARD

After being left at the altar by a potential new owner, the directors of the Blind River Beavers are searching for new suitors to help the local junior ‘A’ hockey franchise in the 2012-13 season.

The Beavers felt that they had struck a deal with former Sudbury Wolves coach Bryan Verreault to buy and coach the team, but the deal fell through at the last minute. Now, with debts mounting and the clock ticking towards the start of the spring tryout campaign, the local club is scrambling to put the pieces in place to ice a competitive club for next season.

“Expenses keep going up every year, and it’s always tough to make ends meet,” admits Beavers president Stuart Campbell.

However, Campbell notes that, “This situation is not unlike most tier II junior hockey franchises across the country.”

Campbell points out that travel costs take up a big chunk of the nearly $200,000 it takes to run the team. For example, it costs more than $5,000 for the Beavers to travel to road games in Kirkland Lake and Iroquois Falls.

Along with travel costs, the Beavers are faced with the task of billeting players in the community, which costs close to $30,000 each season, along with paying costs for coaches, referees, advertising, accommodations, NOJHL league fees and various administrative costs.

“Our local sponsors continue to be wonderful to the team,” Campbell states.

Unfortunately, he also remarks that, “Our home game attendance has dropped off in the past two years.”
