PLENTY OF SHOTS, BUT FEW GOALS FOR BEAVERS
by: Kelly James

BLIND RIVER - If shots-on-goal actually decided which team wins the hockey game, the Blind River Beavers would have scored a pair of victories last weekend.

Unfortunately, shots-on-goal is only a statistic, while goals are the deciding factor on the scoreboard. By that measure, the Beavers lost a pair of home games by scores of 6-1 against the Soo Eagles and 5-1 against the Sudbury Cubs.

In both games, the Beavers fired more shots on goal than their opposition, indicating that they are maintaining a strong work ethic as the regular season in the Northern Ontario Junior 'A' Hockey League winds down. However, both the Eagles and Cubs generated the prime scoring chances while visiting Blind River, while the Beavers had little to show for their hard work.

The Beavers stayed right with the high-flying Eagles for two periods on Friday, as they surrendered only one goal in each period to trail 2-0 after 40 minutes of play. The Michigan squad struck for two more goals in the first two minutes of the third period, however, to effectively put the game out of reach for the goal-challenged Beavers.

Brian Depp got the Eagles off to a fast start with the only goal of the first period, just 98 seconds after the opening face-off. Connor Lyons finished off a slick passing play to make it 2-0 midway through the second stanza, and goals by Taylor Pickering and George Curry made it 4-0 early in the final frame.

Luke Karakas got the Beavers on the board with a good effort in front of the goal at the midpoint of the third period, but all hopes of a Blind River comeback ended when Aaron Leach scored on a penalty shot with 4:41 left in regulation time. full story here...
The smooth skating, Muio, is leading the Beavers in many facets this season. 23 points through 39 games leads all Beavers players in scoring, and his 5 power play markers sees Muio tied for 12th in the NOJHL.  The native of Sault Ste. Marie, ON is in his first season with the Beavers after a very successful year with Algoma during 2010-11.
